Round 5 is knocking on the door with the Spanish Grand Prix ready for action.

The Spanish Grand Prix is making its 35th appearance on the Formula 1 championship calendar since the first round held in the county in 1951 with a street race in Pedralbes, Barcelona. It since been held in Jarama for nine races between 1968 and 1981, Montjuich Park (Barcelona) for four races between 1969 and 1975, and Jerez (1986-1990) before moving to it’s now familiar Catalunya home for the fifteenth straight year.

However, the Spanish Grand Prix can trace it’s roots much further back prior to the inception of the Formula 1 World Championship as we know it today. The first ever was held in 1913 and was won by a Rolls Royce driven by Carlos de Salamanca.

One of the most famous Spanish Grand Prix races however was in 1981 when the Ferrari of Gilles Villeneuve took the win over Ligier’s Jacques Laffite by a mere 0.211seconds – four one thousandths closer than last round win by Fernando Alonso over Michael Schumacher.

Held just 20kms from Barcelona near the village of Montmelo, the Circuit de Catalunya is atop of a hill which leads to great views but unpredictable wind can play havoc with a good qualifying lap.

This year the teams will face slightly new conditions with the circuit resurfaced during the European winter making the track less abrasive although it’s expected to still be tough on tyres. Cars need to have good aero package here to be kind to the tyres – particularly the fronts. In addition most driver request a car with a little understeer mixed with just enough stiffness in the front end for the quick changes of directions.

Drivers report that through the high speed corners, they are reaching speeds over 250kph and pulling 4.5G. Mechanical requirements tend to be less of a priority here with only 58% of the lap spent on full throttle but a delicate touch on the selection of gear rations is essential by car engineers and drivers being mindful of over-revving the engines is a must to finish the race and still be able to use their engines for another round.

A balance between down force for the numerous high speed corners with minimal drag for long straights is also required.

Passing is tough here but moves are generally happening into Banc Sabadell, two corners from the finish.

Fans have fanatically started to follow F1 since Spaniard Fernando Alonso starting making a name for himself in the past few years with Renault. But after a stellar start to the year notching up 3 wins from 4 starts, tickets were sold out weeks in advance and attendance is expected to be close to 120,000 people trackside on race day.

This weekend marks the return of one familiar face while losing a few others. Injured Columbian Juan Pablo Montoya is finally fit to race for McLaren after a tennis injury in early March kept him out of the last two rounds.
BAR Honda were handed a two race ban after a guilty finding of running with under-weight cars in the San Marino Grand Prix. This means that the team won’t be seen until the European Grand Prix on the last weekend in May after BAR decided not to challenge the ruling.

Renault is the unbeatable favourite for the race with four from four wins so far this season. But with Ferrari’s surprise burst of speed in San Marino, it’s likely they could find some challenge from the Italian squad as well as from the likes of McLaren and even Toyota according to Giancarlo Fisichella, Renaults #2 driver.
