Teenage motor racing driver Lucas Dumbrell has been taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries after a crash during a support race to the V8 Supercar championship at Sydney’s Oran Park.

Dumbrell, the younger brother of Holden V8 Supercar driver Paul Dumbrell, rolled his car several times during a Formula Ford race on Friday.

The 19-year-old from Melbourne had to be cut from the wreckage of the open-wheeler car, and was taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Officials said he had suspected spinal injuries but was conscious.

Lucas’ shaken brother did not take part in the V8 Supercar practice session held immediately after the Formula Ford event, going to the hospital to be with his brother instead.

Lucas is in his first season competing in the Australian Formula Ford championship with Team Sonic.

The accident caused the abandonment of Friday’s Formula Ford race.

Update on Lucas Dumbrell's Condition

Rising Victorian Formula Ford competitor, Lucas Dumbrell, has been transported to Liverpool Hospital (Sydney) after a high-speed incident in the opening race of the final round of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Oran Park Raceway today.

The Sonic Motor Racing Services driver's Mygale racecar rolled several times after an incident on the opening lap.

After being stabilised at the scene, Dumbrell was transported to Liverpool Hospital where Doctors have completed a number of scans to determine the extent of his injury.

Lucas Dumbrell undergoes surgery

Brother of HSV Dealer Team driver, Paul Dumbrell, Lucas - who was seriously hurt in a Formula Ford crash at Oran Park yesterday (Friday) - last night underwent surgery at Liverpool hospital to both further examine and stabilise injuries he received in the accident.

Doctors spent many hours stabilising the injuries and gaining a better idea of the extent of the damage to Lucas' spinal cord.

It has been confirmed that whilst Lucas' spinal cord has been 'compromised', importantly it has not been severed.

The Dumbrell family said in a statement that they would like to thank the many well wishes and messages of support for Lucas that have been flooding in since the crash

The key area of concern for the medicos at this stage is pain in Lucas' back. He will undergo surgery tonight to further understand the extent of injury.

It is expected that tomorrow morning, Lucas will be transported to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dumbrell's family – along with members of the Sonic Motor Racing Services team – are at his bedside and are extremely thankful for the outpouring of support they have received today.

The Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship is a support event to the NRMA Motoring and Services V8 Supercar event, in which Lucas' elder brother, Paul is competing.

An update on Lucas' condition will be released when more information becomes available.

The thoughts of Sonic Motor Racing Services go out to Lucas and his family at this time.

Things are sounding a bit more positive for Lucas, he's been awoken from his coma and if everything goes well he will be transported back to Melbourne today or tomorrow.

It was a massive accident, always sad to see things like this, he clipped the back of another car going over the flip flop just before the final corner and launched over the top, the car rolled until it hit the tyres. The car did what it was supposed to, it lost all its wheels/suspension arms, etc. as it rolled. Garry flew straight up to be with Lucas and the Chaplin was going to see the family. I certainly hope that he can recover but we will wait for the hospital to confirm how the surgery has gone. My thoughts are with the Dumbrell family, Get well soon Lucas!!!

Unfortunately not the greatest of news. Fingers crossed for the best possible recovery.

From eNews 84
www.mnews.com.au
quote:
Formula Ford racer Lucas Dumbrell has sustained permanent spinal injuries following an unfortunate accident at Oran Park on Friday.

The 19-year-old ran over the back of another car as the field slowed to observe a full-course yellow, and the Autopro Mygale was launched into a series of violent rolls, from Oran Park's famous 'Flip-Flop', down to the outer wall at the final turn.

While many a Formula Fordster has emerged from significant shunts unscathed, Dumbrell was less fortunate.
He remained conscious, but had to be cut from the car and was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where an overnight operation assessed spinal damage.

On Sunday, came confirmation that Dumbrell's spinal chord had been 'compromised, but not severed', but that further tests and recovery time would determine the extent of any permanent injury.

Dumbrell's family met with specialists on Monday afternoon and, as eNews readied for release, updated his condition.

He remains in an induced coma in Liverpool Hospital, following surgery to repair the C5 vertebra, which was deemed a success.

Lucas will be transferred to Melbourne's Austin Hospital as soon as is practicable for further treatment, although we understand the prognosis is not good.

"He just turned 19 last week and he's had his life changed and it's shattering," elder brother Paul told us late Monday.

"My thoughts are only with him. He's one of the strongest young kids I've ever met and I'll be by his side the whole way..."

Subject: Lucas Dumbrell Update

9/12/08 16:20
Sonic Motor Racing Services and Dumbrell Family Release:

Popular Victorian Formula Ford youngster Lucas Dumbrell is still in a stable condition at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney following his spectacular crash at Oran Park Raceway last Friday.

Doctors have told the Dumbrell family that the operation they performed on Friday night was a success and that they were able to repair the damaged C5 vertebrae in Lucas’ neck.

Lucas is awake and has been buoyed by some visits from family and friends.

Doctors have confirmed that his spinal cord is compromised and at the moment that remains something that will be better understood in time.

It is expected that Lucas will be transported to Melbourne later in the week.

If you wish to send cards please direct them to:
Sonic Motor Racing Services
Unit 2/19 Nicole Close
Bayswater, 3153 VIC
The team will ensure that they are passed on immediately.
or email to getwelllucas@automotivebrands.com.au

(From an email)

I think the C5 vertebrae is to do with the arm like movement of the arms specially the elbow area.

Laser maybe a card on behalf of V8 central??

there was some amateur video of the crash on monday night's Nine News. looked horrific!

get well soon lucas, and best wishes to him and his family!

however, this accident again proves that something needs to be done urgently to slow cars down after a safety car or yellow flag. whether it is a flashing light in the cockpit or an instant alert from race control to the driver, having a driver travelling at full speed towards either an accident site, like at bathurst, or the slowed field behind the SC, as with dumbrell at OP, is extremely unsafe. hopefully this is rectified by 2009 as i shudder to think what could happen next time.

We're all here, we're the Bathurst boys; and you can't hear Richo above the noise...

Perhaps if drivers obeyed flag signals then this & the Bathurst crash wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't need to discuss them like this.

Part of the issue is that when drivers are seeing the SC boards, they slow down too quickly.
There have been a number of incidents where the deployment of the SC has caused some problems.

Getting the drivers to slow down more gradually may be a partial answer to the problem.
