The A1GP concept of the world cup of motorsport could be taken out of its current purgatory by the end of July, AUTOSPORT understands.

A leading figure from the series, which collapsed ahead of its fifth season in 2009, claims to have put together a package with a group of investors that will get the series back on track in 2011.

Currently, the Ferrari-engined cars used for its fourth and final season, along with the Intellectual Property and around a dozen of the Lolas used in seasons one to three, are in the hands of a pair of administrators acting on behalf of the creditors, who between them are owed around $200million.

The main creditor is former series boss Tony Teixeira, but the South African is not involved in the rescue package.

Should the rescue package go ahead, AUTOSPORT understands around 10 of the previous countries would make up the grid of 18 cars, but none of the old franchise holders would be involved.

Also, rather than the series propping up the teams financially, which ultimately brought about its collapse, it would be run to a GP2-style model, where the teams are responsible for finding their own funding and A1GP operates as a spare-parts business.

A 2011/12 calendar of 10 races (four pre-Christmas) would visit many of the previous venues.

why not just let the idea die it was doomed from the beginning and the new re-incarnation will also fail tremendously.

I admit i did have some hope for the series hen it first began but that faded fast as the series became more about the countries they were representing rather than the actual driving talent on display.

Who cares if it fails again! It's not our money!

I really enjoyed the first seasons - It's just more motorsport to watch!

I for one, welcome it back!

The singular pivot point for a series like this is the drivers.

In the first seaosn we had guys like Verstappen, Piquet, Brisoce, Davison, Reid, Hulkenburg, Kerr, Sutil, Enge, Premat, Firman, Jani etc, etc.
And the racing was brilliant!

But can it get good drivers again? If it turns into superleague, which is effectively now just a terribly wrong 'feeder' series, with 17 yr old Spanish drivers - it WILL be terrible!

Drivers are everything.

I agree with you there the drivers that make up the series are all important to the varying success or failure of the series. They need some quality drivers as well as allowing for the development of younger drivers however, with the series going to independently funded teams i can only see a bunch of drivers that are past it trying to re-start there careers.

I would be surprised if any track promoter would welcome back anything that Tony Teixeira would be involved in. A1gp hurt motoprsports image around the world!
