Firestone Twin 275s - Qualifying & practice

Alex Tagliani put Sam Schmidt Motorsports back on pole position again just two weeks after the Indy 500, heading off Ganassi's Dario Franchitti and Penske's Will Power for the top spot.

Alex Tagliani claimed his second consecutive pole position, following up his Indy 500 success by similarly claiming the top spot at Texas Motor Speedway for the Firestone Twin 275s on Saturday evening.

Dario Franchitti will start alongside him, while Will Power is forced off the front row to line up alongside Takuma Sato from the second row of the grid.

James Jakes set no time during qualifying, and but should still start the first race from the back row.

Qualifying times

Alex Tagliani put in his two qualifying laps in 24.3530s and 24.3304s on the 1.5 mile oval track of Texas Motor Speedway to record an average speed of 215.186mph in his qualifying run.

A fast first race of the double-header Firestone Twin 275k at Texas Motor Speedway saw only one caution period, and effectively only one leader from start to finish once Dario Franchitti swiftly ejected Alex Tagliani from the front spot.

After a caution caused by a collision between Charlie Kimball and Wade Cunningham right in front of Franchitti, the final 10-lap shootout was much closer but Franchitti kept control of the inside line and made it across the line some five-hundredths of a second ahead of Dixon, making this the 23rd closest finish in IndyCar history.

Penske driver Will Power took full advantage of the luck of the draw to claim his first ever oval circuit victory in IndyCar, starting form third place and eventually winning by a convincing margin from Ganassi's Scott Dixon.

Dixon's team mate, Dario Franchitti, was left deeply frustrated by the lottery held between race 1 and race 2 which saw him draw 28th place for his starting position, his worst-ever series start in IndyCar. He gamely battled his way through the field but ran out of laps when he reached seventh place.

Franchitti would have been helped by a yellow flag during the closing stages of the race to close everyone up, but none came - the first time an IndyCar event has run at Texas without a single caution.

That was exciting to watch but Franchitti didn't like the lottery draw. I wonder if he would have complained if he had picked the #1 slot intstead of the 28th.
