No they haven't. Hockey knew what he said (which is why he was coaxed into apologising), but once he knew he was in ****, he just kept on digging.

Well they have. The comments may have been harsh but you cannot say that there wasn't some truth to it. It was just the pressure from the socially left in the media that forced an apology out of him.

To respond to Bruce in the NRL thread: it is probably the single hardest loss I have had to deal with at Souths to lose Bully. Much worse than Sam Burgess as he didn't symbolise Souths as Bully did. I think a lot will underestimate just how much a loss he will be to Souths but I fully understand how engrossed he is with NZ and I think given that he will make the successful transition that others haven't.

How was he proven factually wrong? The poorest of people (so the lowest on the socio-economic scale) don't own cars (in the same proportion as rich people) or if they do have cars, don't use them as much as the rich. How is this not true? It just stands to reason that someone who has more disposable income will be able to drive more than someone who is poor. Sure the comments are harsh and from a political point of view, shouldn't have been said but they are true. So time to move on with Hockey's reputation left in tact

Bloody Hell Bundy you really just scraped the bottom of the barrel with this.

Smoking Joe was not taken out of context nor was he mis-construed.

He stated poor people don't have cars and drive less. That's not correct, they live in them

People on low incomes usually live on outer suburbs with poor public transport have to commute long distances to jobs and own older less fuel efficient cars.

You're just as out of touch as that idiot we have for a treasurer

Words from Leunig......bloody legend!

I think Australia's mood and morale have worsened considerably. The actions of the Government are harsh and its demeanour has been appalling. Citizens are mostly able to understand and bear tough measures but they cannot abide administrative bad faith and leadership that engages so obviously in bullying and antagonistic culture war against much of the population. The sense of autocracy, corruption and overbearing male authoritarianism is palpable and, of course, people don't like it. It is evident that the Government refuses to embrace the whole of society with warmth, compassion and magnanimity. The wealth divide is growing alarmingly. The sectarian tough guy political culture has never been so narrow, immature, emotionally retarded or so dysfunctional - and it is all so utterly boring, unimaginative and colourless. The people of Australia are mostly lovelier, saner and wiser than the Government.
Original interview from The New Zealand Herald Twelve Questions: Michael Leunig May 15, 2014.

No he didn't say "poor" people or people on low incomes - he said the poorest of people. Basically, those that are cutting the finest line of having a roof over their heads and being on the streets. This difference has been missed by many including the social commentators.

Remember this is what he said, his total quote in yesterday's Australian:

"They say you've got to have wealthier people or middle-income people pay more. Well, change to the fuel excise does exactly that, the poorest people either don't have cars or actually don't drive very fair in many cases".

So even at the end of his point he qualifies it and says that this isn't a blanket generalisation for all of the poorest people but there are many cases out there that either these people don't own cars or drive as much as the wealthy or middle-income earners which I have explained before to be logically true.

The title itself on the article is misleading.

But apart from that, the article doesn't do itself any favours in terms of credibility by only focusing on high income earners and the effect of an excise tax on them when Hockey mentions middle income earners as well.

The other comment I would make is that the statistics both show that the lowest socio-economic group have the highest percentage compared to other groups of not owning cars and high income earners spend the most on fuel (well naturally ) so they drive further. So again his statement is correct - it is just that, for the fuel usuage, if you take into account their low income and the increase in tax, that proportionality speaking it is a higher burden on the poorest of people should they own a car that is.

You are making yourself look like an even bigger tool than Hockey by trying to defend his comments.

Just stop.

Or better still leave and go back to your armchair website and tell someone who cares.

Smoking Joe Hockey tells us the age of entitlement is over.

Well like most of his rubbish it's only over for some.

Joe Hockey, his wife Melissa Babbage, and his father Richard own a house in Canberra.
Roughly worth 1.5 million. Joe the poor sod only owns 5% of it. Babbage owns 61% and Richard Hockey the last 34%.
Now Smokin and Mellisa are married. Effectively they own 66% of this home.
Smokin Joe gets $270 a night for staying in a house he owns 2/3s of.
Other Liberals also stay and have stayed at Hockeys house.

Even though Joe hasn't broken any laws or rules this just spanks of hypocrisy.

He's working the system to make himself even richer while he's ripping the guts out of pensioners, low income earners and the sick

Hockey has really put his foot in it this time... good thing pollies have mouths big enough for both feet..

pretty disgusted with his attitude...

just a shame that there isn't an alternative and Lab or Lib just may think we are voting for them because they do something worthwhile?
