don't the DPP investigate and then make recomendations to the Police?

I am sure here in Victoria for instance when the Coroner finds something strange they refer it to the DPP to make a decision about persuing a case and if the DPP find something it is then referred to the Police to investigage further and take the matter to court, I don't believe the DPP can take a case to court, the Police have to.

That's right Trev which is why it should have gone to the police.

Regardless of what happens now, Thompson is tainted meat and tainted meat gets thrown out.

Seems to indicate otherwise, but that is NSW.

http://www.cdpp.gov.au/Practice/ProsecutionProcess.aspx

Commonwealth DPP site is more helpful.

The Office of the DPP can review the evidence and is the group who actually lays charges in most cases. Once the investigator considers enough evidence has been gathered to substantiate a criminal charge, this evidence is compiled in a brief. Briefs of evidence are referred to the DPP by investigators.

If charged, there will be a committal hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence on which a jury could convict and then send the defendant to trial in the District Court or Supreme Court, if there is. Then the DPP can chose to pursue the case or not.

If charges have already been laid without the matter first being referred to the DPP, the DPP will consider whether that charge should be maintained and how the matter should proceed.

I guess that the DPP has decided not to lay charges after seeing the brief.

Maybe, just maybe there is no proceedable legal case against Thompson, members here have speculated, the media have specualted, but maybe there is no legal case to answer.

Yes I am sure there is a case of public opinion to answer to and that will happen at the next election, but for now it is time to move on.

I'm with the PM. I have full confidence in the Member for Dobell, Craig Thomson, who continues to do a wonderful job representing the people in his electorate, when he's not ducking and weaving pertinent questions. I'm also with Craig Emerson when he says the parliament should not be the forum for smearing the Member for Dobell. He can do it perfectly well on his own. Australian people don't expect the scorn and derision, and the grubby, filthy politics from the Opposition when the ALP can do it just as well without their help.

No Thompson, no Federal labor government: I think its as simple as that.

Brave stand Julia, but he WILL bring you down, and you dont need any help there, you are doing a fine job of that yourself!!

How embarassment, Julia may get ousted by the clown prince himself, Tony (R)Abbott!! ha ha

New Commodore Hey! So you used your own money? Would you like to buy a used bridge?

Geez, I wish I could get a company credit card and spend it on whatever I like and not get into trouble.
It wouldn't be "ladies of the night" though, it'd be certain vehicles.

I wouldn't be too quick to judge that, all Gillard has to do is repair the bridge with Wilkie and it won't matter who comes and goes. Her real strength is in her negotiating skills

It was bad form, there is no doubting that, but "illegal", obviously not, time to move on and for the LNP and their supporters to stop grasping at straws, you will have your chance to have your say when the next Federal election comes around.

It's not time to move on Trev.
Someone has to keep reminding the public just how bad the government MPs are.

The ABC is now referring to Craig Thomson and the Fair Work Australia 'investigation' as "What a Farce!" Good to see the ABC as 'our ABC' rather than the Labor Party's PR department. Doesn't look like the ABC will be "moving on" anytime soon.

I get the impression that Chris Brown is not exactly enamoured with Craig Thomson.

Again, the media is reporting their opinion instead of fact, I don't even bother with the 7.30 Report now that Kerry O'Brien is gone, that bloke that runs it now could get a job in one of the TT, ACA or 60 Minutes programs, he full of his own opinions, not reporting facts.
