Not sure this thread brings out the best anyone really...we bang on, try to counter point....and so it goes.....on and on, and on...and on...and on

It's the longest lasting thread this forum has ever had. It must have something going for it. If we could get rabbits, Albert, 27GV and a few others back here, it would be better.
"We bang on, try to counter point, on and on and on...": It's like all those Holden/Ford threads that this place exists on and has seen hundreds (thousands?) going on and on over the past 15,16,17 years. They don't bring out the best in anyone either really, but why do we have forums? To bang on, try to counter point... You should know. After 13,696 posts, you're as good at it as anyone.

Wasn't excluding myself by any means Zac, but the V8 forum has grown, matured...sure "occasionally" we get aggro....but it use to be a war zone, not now....but the political thread is aggressively partisan as ever...just sayin...

It could do better, like less personal stuff, but it's not aggressively partisan. Well, maybe some people are sometimes. Some sulk a bit, some certainly don't like being corrected on facts, and some are partisan to the extent that they can't ever see anything positive in any politician from the "other side", but generally, this thread motors along just fine.

Now, where were we?

So Julie bishop is giving it away

How will she be remembered ?....didn't seem to be a controversial figure....was very tough, and had a stare that would scare Christ off the cross

Ah! The Julie Bishop 'death stare'. Tough lady, classy lady, and whatever your politics, a very good MP, an excellent Foreign Minister, and unlike so many others, she leaves politics with no hint of scandal or dishonesty following her. Some people are too aggressively partisan to notice, but she will be remembered as a consummate politician, and respected by almost all on all sides of the political divide.

yeah I agree Zac. ..I met her a few years back ( for about 2 minutes ) and she was very engaging ( like most MPs ) and sophisticated. Going to be a massive loss not only for the Libs but our country as a whole.
Reminds me a bit like Albo.....which is kinda weird

She was never going to succeed in a party as right wing male dominated as the Libs, she did well to get the Foreign Ministers job - I actually think she did OK with that, but I will never forgive her over her role in the Hardies issue

The "Hardies issue" relating to Julie Bishop: You're probably tired of me correcting you, but anyway... Julie Bishop was a solicitor working for a law firm which acted for CSR (not Hardie's). Julie Bishop was given the task of defending CSR against a claim from workers with mesothelioma who worked for a subsidiary company which worked for CSR. The CSR argument was that CSR was not responsible for workers working for another company which did work for CSR. Whatever your feelings are about the ethics of that case, Julie Bishop was acting under instructions from her client, CSR. Everyone has a right to legal representation in court, and Julie Bishop provided that legal representation. Solicitors and lawyers are paid to represent their clients, not to make moral judgements about them. It's the court that makes those judgements. Julie Bishop acted entirely ethically and properly in defending her company's clients. (BTW, that was in the 1980s, before she entered politics.)

I'm sure that all lawyers and solicitors can offer instances where they are reviled by people who are family members, friends and sympathisers of those on the opposing side in court cases. It comes with the territory in the legal profession. (Julia Gillard has also had to cop the same treatment for the same kind of reasons that you give for never forgiving Julie Bishop - and she still cops it even now, although a lot less since she left politics.) Do you really have to go back to the 1980s before Julie Bishop entered politics to give us a reason why you dislike her so much? Just tell us that you don't like Liberal politicians. It makes more sense than this.

Impeccable styling, flashy eyes and lovely smile. 11 years as deputy PM and only 9 votes for leader in the spill...really says it all about the party(and I think made her realise,- no future!)....of which, all the wrong people are currently leaving.....thank god for her saving us from Dutton! Will there be any moderates left in the LNP?

Yes, all the wrong ones are leaving, and the Liberal Party today is nothing even remotely resembling the party that Robert Menzies formed back in 1944. It's full of mean-spirited people with no vision. They deserve to be hammered in this year's election, and maybe then, the party will rethink and get back to what it should be.

Very true Zac!

Does anyone know anything about the Australian Workers' Party?
Supposedly formed by disgruntled ALP people.

mean, tricky and out of touch! The LNP is now more Howard’s legacy than Menzies...
