My thoughts go out to the family.
http://www.crash.net/world+superbikes/news/177066/1/superpole_cancelled_after_support_tragedy.html
The first World Superbike Championship Superpole session of the 2012 season has been cancelled after a serious accident during the preceding Australian Supersport/Superstock claimed the life of one of its competitors.
The incident occurred during the early stages of the race, with a multi-bike collision involving a number of riders. Among those involved was Oscar McIntyre, who was fatally injured in the tragic accident.
Superpole had been due to get underway at 15.00 local time, but having been delayed by more than an hour as medical teams and police worked on the scene, the decision was eventually taken to cancel it altogether.
It means the grid positions will be determined by the results at the end of Q2, which means Kawasakis' Tom Sykes will start the opening round from pole position, ahead of Max Biaggi, Carlos Checa and Jakub Smrz.
Crash.net wishes to extend its condolences to Oscar's family and friends.

What was not reported in detail was the accident happened when Oscar ran off at turn 1 and could not slow enough before re entering the track between 2&3 where the collision was unavoidable.
There was a large temporary fence erected just beyond the sand trap before Sunday morning .
Another lost in pursuit of motorsport dreams. RIP O.Mc

It was reported mate, you just had to know where to find it. http://www.mcnews.com.au/NewsArchives/2012/February/McIntyre_RIP.htm
I personally at the time chose not to put the details up thinking it a bit macabre. If people wanted to know the details, they could google it. But I suppose after a few days the rawness has gone and it's a good thing to start discussing safety.

I know where to find it Hi T. The nature of the incident has to date been mostly missed by the mainstream media outlets.
The issue is that a decision was made after the fact and I wonder what this means for the ongoing safety at PI T1. Could there be track alterations required to continue with international license? After all, the fence which was erected then poses another danger for bikes exiting the circuit at high speed as Jakub Smrz did in practice, before the fence appeared. |

| Was very similar to Cam McConville's effort in 2009 but bike riders aren't protected by roll cages. |

PVDA, what is the general concensus regarding T1? Will there need to be a fence at all times? Is there a real possibility of changing T1?

I don't know what can be done with turn 1 as no matter what they do someone will find a way to get hurt down there.
When the track was rebuilt back in the early 90's they used to have an earth wall separating turns 1 & 3, this was removed and the current set up put in. |
