This year should be the biggest yet for the third installment of the World Rallycross Championship. While it isn't the biggest event wise, being only 12 rounds after having lost the Istanbul and Italian rounds, (Istanbul was waved goodbye and Italy is replaced with a round in Latvia), there are some big names joining the series this year, and in some ways, it will make members of a certain age weak at the knees considering that they were the big names in the World Rally Championship many years ago.

We have:

A 1 time WRC and 2 times World RX champion

An X Games Gold Medalist, Pikes Peak record holder among other things

And the son of this bloke, who will be running in the same team.

Other names you'll find familiar are Mattias Ekstrom in his potent EKSRX Audi S1

And a Hoonigan in his M Sport built Focus RS RX.

Round 1 kicks off in Portugal next weekend.

There is a live stream, but because of TV deals with certain entertainment companies, it isn't available in Australia. Not even last years archived footage is available here. There are highlights after the weekend on Youtube though.

It's a cool series. Sadly we don't get it on TV here (unless it's on Foxtel) but from what I've seen of it the last few years since its inception (or return) it's been enjoyable. Rallycross to me is like the Stadium Super Trucks. It's entertaining as hell to watch, even though in a sense it's not "real" racing. It's cool to have Loeb sign up and give Solberg some real competition.

I'd go with return, as having it as part of X Games and forming a big part of the previous Dirt games has helped its cause.

If you want to, go to the Duke Video website and buy the 2013 and 14 series highlights. $30 for 7 hours worth of season highlights is better value than the television medium it's broadcast on.

Can't wait for this. I've loved Rallycross ever since the mid-80s when the late-Mike Gibson & Ian Chappell would present highlights of the "British Rallycross Grand Prix" from Brands Hatch on the 'proper' Wide World of Sports TV show (as opposed to the Sunday morning 'breaky' show they have now)

Is Foxtel showing it again this year??

Yes they are.

EDIT: There is a Youtube live stream, it just can't be watched here because of certain TV deals. Our Kiwi friends can watch it though.

EDIT: IMG have produced an hour highlights show specially for Youtube for the European Championship.

It is very good.

EDIT: The replay of the World RX livestream is currently on Youtube, and surprisingly isn't blocked yet. Catch it ASAP.

The European Rallycross highlights with the Euro Supercars and Touring Cars (1600cc, normally aspirated and proper drive) will be on the official channel on Wednesday.
