Crashed on the pace lap! Oriol Servia was the intended driver but instead a GM exec was behind the wheel for some reason for the opening lap.

Once they cleared it all up and got the cars restarted, Oriol drove a backup pace car for the race.

I remember the pace car crashing in the pits at the Indianapolis 500 back in the 60s after pulling in at the start of the race, and I also remember the pace car being stolen prior to a NASCAR race at Talladega in the 90s, but never this:

RIP LJ - loved and never forgotten.

"It was dry for the second go-around. Grice, nervous, worrying about his Bathurst jinx, ran 2:25.9. The amazing Brock, using every last centimetre of bitumen, yet keeping the car straight and balanced and at full noise, came back with a staggering 2:20.0 as if to say: "Match that". And people just shook their heads, bit their lips and wondered who would be second".

The Peter Brock trophy is now where it belongs.

From the official Chevrolet Press Release:

DETROIT ó We are thankful that there were no serious injuries. Both the pace car driver and the series official were taken to the infield care center, where they were checked, cleared and released.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened. Many factors contributed, including weather and track conditions. The carís safety systems performed as expected

Oh yes, that dry track was truly treacherous.

What a bunch of corporate stiffs GM management are. They missed a great oppprtunity to have a laugh about it rather than make up BS excuses and then parlay that into some tongue and cheek comments about how exceptionally well their new product held up to the contact.

In the pre-race coverage for last night's race at Texas Motor Speedway they showed footage of the pace car crash at the Indianapolis 500. I thought it was in the 60s but it was in 1971.

Much more severe than the Detroit shunt.

And the 1986 Talladega pace car theft:

America and Australia are two different places though, whilst us Aussies might have a laid back laugh, it would be massively embarrassing over there - they don't get corporate sarcasm like we do.

That pace car theft is hilarious. Long live America.

They also showed these highlights (lowlights) pre-race.

This was from the Texas Motor Speedway back in 1999. I do not even REMEMBER this one, but it was in the IRL years (the split). Johnny Rutherford was driving:

This was in Toronto in the rain with Arie Luyendyk driving in 2014:

So, even the best of drivers can have their moments. :)
