I love this.

Audi, in Australia, have decided that the cost of replacing airbags on many pre 2000 models can exceed the value of the car and therefore are offering to buy them off owners. I suppose they will then scrap them.

If Audis are worth less than the airbag replacement costs, will we have other companies buying all old models from Auction and used car yards and maybe offering high tradein deals on their models.

It could get a lot of higher polluting old cars off the road.

I wonder if this is a cunning way to save a few bucks on the airbag swap and get the odd old Audi owner behind the wheel of a new(er) one?

The flaw in that plan is what if the car owner is no prepared for/can't afford another car purchase?

Ford fans be proud. History of Australian motor racing shows Ford has been and will always be superior. They have to slow them down when they get serious about racing. The Phase 4 scared the **** out of people, they banned it. Sierra gets called on a technicality, Falcon EF "...had its wings clipped to make Holden part of the show", AU not allowed to show it's potential, Falcon BF gets clipped. Mustang Is so good Supercars made up a rule and gets a bag of cement in the roof, and it still wins.

I think that the possibility of a trade in/new car purchase is not relevant in this case.

If only one owner sells them the old car, Audi save money, and one more old car is off the road. More acceptances, more savings.

They also should be scouring the used car lots and auctions and buying when they can.

There is also a shortage of airbags to fit as Takata replacements, so buying and scrapping old cars helps with the supply problem.

quote:
With so many components that need to be repaired or replaced, the total cost for airbag replacement from a professional can range anywhere from $1,000 to over $5,000. The labor costs account for about a third of the total.

Other manufacturers/importers must be considering a similar tactic.

No, I'm talking about the car owner. Say Audi buy the car for the cost of the airbag replacement. Is it enough to buy another car of the same caliber, transfer cost...?

NO!
But Audi saves money.

It's just willing sellers and there will be some. If they don't want to sell, then they don't. Free choice.

Audi has only got to buy one car to save money.

There is every chance the remaining cars will be deemed unroadworthy and put off the road.
