Both Lewis and Nico have signed on for another two years.

No way Mercedes will sack Lewis either, not over this. The guy was trying to win the WDC, he wasn't just going to lie down and hand it over. I think Lewis has learned from his MacLaren days that teams don't always get it right...

Anyway Mercedes consider him to be the most talented driver out there. Lets face it, if one engine had gone 15 laps further he'd still be WDC.

Letting both drivers race for the championship, rather than having a designated number one and two driver is always going to produce some conflicts. But I definitely prefer that policy over Ferrari's.

If you can get past what appears to be drunk Jenson, scroll to 14:25.
Also, DJRFord, were you with Jenson after the race?

RIP LJ - loved and never forgotten.

"It was dry for the second go-around. Grice, nervous, worrying about his Bathurst jinx, ran 2:25.9. The amazing Brock, using every last centimetre of bitumen, yet keeping the car straight and balanced and at full noise, came back with a staggering 2:20.0 as if to say: "Match that". And people just shook their heads, bit their lips and wondered who would be second".

The Peter Brock trophy is now where it belongs.

Haha Jenson was definitely not sober, that's for sure. Unfortunately I wasn't partying with him! But by christ I'd love to get drunk with an F1 driver, especially Jenson being one of my favourites.

That is an interesting story regarding Lewis quitting. For the sake of the championship fight it's good that he stayed with the team, but in terms of a big story that might get motorsport some proper mainstream media coverage, it would've been a brilliant story for the reigning world champion to quit the leading team mid-season effective immediately.

Luckily for Mercedes they still got maximum points but it's gotta surely be a tough situation to manage.

They'd already wrapped up the Constructors title, and scoring maximum points just increased their entry fee for next year, it didn't net them anymore money.

Mercedes should have stayed out of it and let them run their own races, Lewis didn't do anything illegal.

**** you're right. For some stupid reason I was thinking the extra points were a bonus on their payout. I mixed that up with the entry fee.

Wow, imagine if Lewis did quit at the time. Where would Mercedes have sourced the replacement? Ocon? Wehrlein?

My money is that they would've chucked Wehrlein straight into the Mercedes and have Ocon make his debut at Manor earlier. It would've been a hell of an early promotion for Pascal though if that happened after only a few races in his F1 career.

2016 was a hell of a year for underdogs

Brexit, Trump, Leicester City, Western Bulldogs, Cronulla Sharks, Chicago Cubs and finally Nico Rosberg

On January 1 if you'd have said all of them would win, you'd be laughed at.

The most interesting thing is that he's the first #2 to actually nab a WDC - Berger, Patrese, Irvine, Coulthard, Barrichello, Webber all failed

Technically Denny Hulme was #2 driver at Brabham in 1967 when he beat Sir Jack to the title.....

His father started 1982 as a #2 as well.

Does Prost count as winning as a #2 in 1989 ??

But Nico isn't a #2 driver. Both drivers are treated equally. The only reason he's considered the underdog is that Lewis is faster, not because of team orders.

You're right in regards to them being equals at Mercedes, but in terms of pace he definitely is a number 2 driver. On his day he can certainly challenge or make Lewis look ordinary, but it's clear to see that Lewis is the faster driver. I guess it's easy to see Nico as a number 2 given that the previous three years together, Lewis has beaten him.

The history of Lewis beating Nico goes back much further than the past 3 years!

But in Mercedes so far there is no number 1 or 2 driver. Nobody gets regularly told to move over and let the other past, like we've often seen, particularly at Ferrari.

Anyway, Nico had a bit more reliability go his way this year, and he made it count. Congrats to him.
