The After Diesel WEC kicks off this weekend at Silverstone for the 6 Hour.

P1 features four red/black/white cars, both built in Germany, albeit different brands. All four manufacturer backed cars are turbo hybrids. There is an interloper in the Collin, which is the only privateer P1 car (until an influx of Ginettas next year), and powered by a fresh Nissan turbo engine from their GTR LM. By fresh, I mean low mileage, barely run in and under stressed.

In WEC P2, you can pick any winner you want, just as long as its an Oreca. Someone must have forgot to tell the French chassis manufacturer that a single make prototype class is dead as the end of year (being Prototype Challenge). Instead, it will live on in a world championship. There will be more variety at Le Mans when the IMSA and ELMS bring their non Orecas along to the French classic.

DailySportsCars preview is here: http://www.dailysportscar.com/2017/04/13/silverstone-lmp-preview-life-with-out-audi-begins.html

As for GTE, Porsche return in a factory capacity with their Cayman911 RSR, and there will be no privateer Corvette from Labre competition in WEC this year. There is a new entrant to GT Am, and quite a familiar one to viewers of Bathurst 12 Hours past, with Clearwater Racing and their chrome dragon 488.

On the other side of the Atlantic, it seems that even though you replace an "old tech" car for a "new tech" one, GM domination still continues, with the Konica Minolta Caddy DPi driven by the brothers Taylor taking three from three, but unlike past few years, IMSA have got the balancing better between the DPis and the ACO P2s. In GTLM, out of three races so far, the Corvettes have taken two wins to the Blue Oval's one, and in GTD, Mercedes AMG have won two, with Porsche winning the Daytona 24 Hour.

Are there Aussies at all in this years WEC field? Yes there are, and there will still be an Australian flag on a Porsche. The Porsche in question is a Gulf coloured 911, and driven by 2015 Carrera Cup champion Nick Foster.

EDIT:

NEXT YEAR WILL BE HUGE

Penske Racing will return to top line US sports car racing with an ORECA DPi in partnership with Honda.

And even bigger news. The Mazda RT24 Ps have been shelved for the rest of the year. The reason being, they will have a new team running them.

That team is Joest Racing.

Mazda Team Joest doesn't sound right. Hear Joest and I automatically think Audi.

We may or may not be seeing a funeral notice for a championship in the next few days, if the current speculation is anything to go by.

Maybe the US path is the right one?

EDIT: Not a death notice, but possibly a cause.

Sucks heaps that Porsche is pulling out for Formula E, like Mercedes the other day announcing they're dropping DTM for FE. It'll be interesting to see if Toyota stay in LMP1. You'd have to imagine at least one more year just so they can win Le Mans finally. But without any real competition, is it worth it?

Yeah i always immediately think of Porsche with Joest as well, along with images of their fluoro yellow "New Man" 956s

I think the Championship itself should be ok, plenty of LMP2's and also alot of manufacturers represented in GTE

Yep, and will be making its debut at Petit Le Mans this year, which is the final IMSA round.
