The thinking was the manufacturers would place some promising rookies at the satellite teams, giving the satellite teams better bikes & hopefully more coverage

It worked in a way, Ben Spies spent a year at Tech 3, while Simoncelli spent two seasons at Gresini. Without the rules both would have likely stepped straight onto a factory bike

However i agree its a wierd rule, and the manufacturers shouldn't be told who can and can't ride their bikes.

you know this rule is an example of what Casey was getting at. The rules have been changing constantly and to dumb the sport down. Limits on number of engines, control tires, fuel capacity limits and more. CS sees Motorcycle Grand Prix racing as a pure form of the sport, which it no longer is.
