Shell Australia has announced its intentions to continue sponsoring Dick Johnson Racing when it today signed a new three-year deal with the Queensland based team. However beginning this year, Shell will no longer be naming rights sponsor for the team, but will still stay on as DJR’s fuel and lubricant supplier.

2004 marked the eighteenth year of Shell’s naming rights partnership with DJR. It was a reasonably successful year for the team, with Steven Johnson and Warren Luff coming third at the Betta Electrical 500, with Steven finishing tenth in the championship in the #17 Shell Helix Falcon.

Tony Firman, Manager of Shell Consumer Lubricants Communications, was pleased with the achievements of the partnership between DJR and Shell – a union spanning almost two decades.

“DJR is the longest-established motor racing team in Australia, founded more than 30 years ago when Dick Johnson earned his first commercial support from Shell Australia,” he said.

“In 1986 we came even closer together when Shell started an unbroken 18-year partnership with Dick as naming rights sponsor of his team. The partnership between Shell Australia and DJR has proven to be one of motor sport’s more enduring relationships, delivering six Shell Australian Touring Car Championships and a trio of Bathurst 1000 victories.

“Over the past 18 years, DJR has grown to become one of the major forces in domestic motorsport, while Shell has achieved valuable marketing, sales and technical advantages from the association both on and off the track,” he continued.

“While Shell will remain involved in motorsport domestically through our association with DJR, it is just one component of our new brand positioning for Shell Helix. Our focus now is to expand the appeal of the Shell Helix brand beyond motorsport as part of an increasingly successful global campaign to attract a much wider market,” he concluded.

Dick Johnson Racing is yet to announce their naming rights sponsor for 2005. Steven Johnson will remain with the team this season, but former V8 Supercar champion, Glenn Seton, replaces Warren Luff at the Gold Coast team. Both DJR cars will grid up for the first race, albeit a non-championship event, at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
