I've been reflecting on what an awesome year it has been for Australians and New Zealanders racing internationally in 2021.
Starting with F1, F2 and F3, we had Ricciardo win the Italian Grand Prix and take McLaren's first F1 victory since 2012. Oscar Piastri currently leads F2 with two rounds to go and has been announced as Alpine's reserve driver for 2022. Liam Lawson won a race and has been quick but unlucky and Marcus Armstrong also scored a podium. Jack Doohan took four wins in F3 to be runner-up in the title and Calan Williams scored a podium.
Moving to MotoGP, Jack Miller had his best season yet with two wins and fourth in the standings, though did make a lot of errors along the way. Remy Gardner secured the Moto2 title on the weekend after a season-long battle with his teammate.
Dixon was strong as always in IndyCar while Power managed to get a win in a difficult season. McLaughlin got a podium in his rookie season and walked away with both the Indy 500 and IndyCar Rookie of the Year awards.
Brendon Hartley, along with Buemi and Nakajima, finished runners-up both at Le Mans and in the WEC. Matt Campbell and Jaxon Evans combined with Christian Ried to finish third in the WEC's GTE Am standings and tenth overall in GTE. James Allen finished third in LMP2 at Le Mans.
Lawson and Evans were on double duty; Lawson really should have won the DTM title this year but finished runner-up following a controversial final round, while Evans finished runner-up in Porsche Supercup.
Molly Taylor leads the new Extreme E championship with one round remaining, while Caitlin Wood scored a top five finish at Spa in the W Series.
I'm sure I've missed some drivers in categories I don't follow, but our part of the world has certainly been well represented this year!
Courtney Duncan claimed her 3rd motocross world championship in a row.
