With the introduction of the 5.4- and 5.7-litre engines next year, it means we say goodbye to the 5-litre V8s that have been the identity of the championship for so long. I thought it would be cool to look back at the numbers for this era. These statistics relate to all ATCC and Supercars championship races from 1993 to 2022. They exclude the 2-litre heat at Amaroo in 1993.

There were 384 rounds held, not including the cancelled Grand Prix in 2020, and 888 races (what a coincidence!). Two of those races featured no result (2018 Gold Coast and 2021 Sydney) while a further five planned races were cancelled: Race 3 at Calder in 1998 and the four races at the Grand Prix in 2020. There were 619 pole positions awarded, including the two qualifying sessions at the Grand Prix in 2020.

56 drivers scored a round win, 65 drivers scored a race win, and 99 drivers finished in the top three in a race. 51 drivers scored a pole position.

There were a few surprises while adding these numbers up; probably the big one for me was the pole positions, with Skaife remaining in the top five despite only driving full-time when there was one qualifying session per weekend, and Bowe staying in the top ten despite taking his final pole in 1999!

I will be posting more threads in the Nostalgia section; one for each of the periods 1993-2002, 2003-2012 and 2013-2022, and one for all of the models of car that were represented on the track.

A return to early February, the return of the Pro class...looking forward to the 12 Hour getting back to its prime. Manthey and WRT have confirmed their entries, looking forward to see which other international teams will make the trip next year.

Reports that Valentino Rossi might drive one of the WRT BMWs; that would be huge!

General / 2022 Le Mans
June 13, 2022, 11:10:22 AM
A good showing by the Aussies and Kiwis, with Hartley taking outright victory for Toyota and Briscoe finishing third for Glickenhaus. James Allen's car won the Pro-Am subclass of LMP2. SVG's Ferrari finished fifth in GTE Pro but was way off the pace, while Nick Cassidy was sixth in GTE Am while Matt Campbell's car was 16th after various issues during the race.

Another easy win for Toyota in the outright stakes. Any chance of a good race between the two was gone when the #7 needed a reset about two-thirds of the way through. Glickenhaus were solid - the #708 almost had the fastest lap of the race - but couldn't consistently maintain the pace of the Toyotas, finishing five laps down with the #709. Alpine had a shocker, finishing 23rd outright after clutch issues early and a crash later in the race. The BOP was a bit of a joke; the Alpine had 16hp taken away after qualifying despite being half a second slower than the Toyotas, and as a result they were struggling to make their way through the LMP2 field in the race. Their fastest race lap was three seconds off the pace.

LMP2 was dominated by Jota. The #38 took the lead in the first hour IIRC and held it to the finish, winning the class by over two minutes. Prema finished second in their Le Mans debut with the other Jota car in third. Penske finished fifth in what was a preparation run of sorts before combining with Porsche for next year. A story I followed during the race was the progress of United Autosports #22; they were pushed into the gravel at turn one on lap one, losing multiple laps, and recovered to finish 10th out of 27 in class.

Ferrari were dudded by BOP in the GTE classes. It was shaping up to be a Porsche-Corvette battle for GTE Pro before three of their four cars had issues; both Corvettes retired from the race, one with brake issues and one taken out by an LMP2, while the leading Porsche had a tyre delamination on the run out of Mulsanne corner. The remaining Porsche took the Pro win ahead of the two AF Corse Ferraris. The #51 Ferrari did hold a small lead with a few hours to go but had a slow puncture, though I don't think it had the pace to hold off the Porsche anyway. SVG's crew had a lonely run to fifth in class.

GTE Am was a battle between Aston Martin and Porsche, with the #33 Aston gaining a crucial advantage by being one queue in front when the actual safety cars came out for the only time. The all-female Iron Dames team did well, finishing 7th in class.

Three days until opening practice for the 2022 season.

With the rain set to continue all of this week and into next week, how much racing will we actually see this weekend?

General / 2022 Bathurst 6 Hour
February 18, 2022, 08:54:20 AM
It's going to be a big month at Bathurst with the 6 Hour at Easter and the 12 Hour four weeks later! Very much looking forward to that period of this year.

The 6 Hour received 88 entries for this year which was whittled down to 70 starters. The entry list is still to be released.
https://bathurst6hour.com.au/2021/12/14/bathurst-6-hour-field-locked-at-70/

Marcos Ambrose will make a one-off return to driving, teaming up with George Miedecke in a GRM-built Mustang.

MOTOGP / MotoGP 2022
January 29, 2022, 11:19:27 AM
Thread for all MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and MotoE discussion this year.

The KTM liveries have been revealed, which includes Gardner's bike. Remy suffered a wrist injury in a motocross incident a couple of weeks ago but should be good for the Rookie Test and official tests starting this week.

https://www.speedcafe.com/2022/01/27/ktm-unveils-2022-motogp-livery/

Marquez has also been cleared to take part in the official tests. He has been suffering from double vision since his own motocross crash last October but has ridden again in the last couple of weeks.

Dovizioso is back full-time with the RNF Yamaha team, having replaced Morbidelli at SRT last year when Morbidelli took Vinales' place in the factory team.

Formula One / Oscar Piastri

I thought that the guy deserves his own thread.

2019 Formula Renault Eurocup champion. 2020 FIA Formula 3 champion. 2021 FIA Formula 2 champion. First driver since Charles Leclerc to take five straight pole positions in F2. He has comfortably secured the F2 title this year against drivers who have had a couple of seasons of experience.

He will be reserve driver for Alpine next year; hopefully he gets a race seat in 2023!

General / Australian circuits
December 07, 2021, 07:43:33 PM
A while ago I came across this cool graphic featuring famous race circuits of the world, drawn to scale:
https://www.carthrottle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/race-tracks-to-scale-2.jpg

Since then I have wanted to make an Australian version. I wanted to see if anyone on here had any thoughts on which circuits should be included. My current list is below; it includes all circuits that have hosted the Australian Grand Prix and all ATCC and Supercars Championship circuits. The extras which are neither Grand Prix nor ATCC circuits are Catalina, Mount Druitt, Wakefield Park, Morgan Park, Baskerville, Aspendale and Hume Weir.

There are so many more Australian circuits in history (see http://theracingline.net/racingcircuits/Australia/index.html). Does anyone think other circuits deserve to be drawn up? I am also considering whether to include well-known hill climbs, speedways and even places like Lang Lang.

General / 2022 Bathurst 12 Hour
November 19, 2021, 10:15:52 AM
The 12 Hour has finalised its date for 2022, after the original date clashed with the 12 Hours of Sebring.
https://www.bathurst12hour.com.au/news/liqui-moly-bathurst-12-hour-confirmed-to-return-on-new-date-in-2022/

The question now is how many of the international entrants will want, or indeed be allowed, to come over here for the event.

General / Aussies and Kiwis overseas in 2021
November 16, 2021, 07:16:58 PM
I've been reflecting on what an awesome year it has been for Australians and New Zealanders racing internationally in 2021.

Starting with F1, F2 and F3, we had Ricciardo win the Italian Grand Prix and take McLaren's first F1 victory since 2012. Oscar Piastri currently leads F2 with two rounds to go and has been announced as Alpine's reserve driver for 2022. Liam Lawson won a race and has been quick but unlucky and Marcus Armstrong also scored a podium. Jack Doohan took four wins in F3 to be runner-up in the title and Calan Williams scored a podium.

Moving to MotoGP, Jack Miller had his best season yet with two wins and fourth in the standings, though did make a lot of errors along the way. Remy Gardner secured the Moto2 title on the weekend after a season-long battle with his teammate.

Dixon was strong as always in IndyCar while Power managed to get a win in a difficult season. McLaughlin got a podium in his rookie season and walked away with both the Indy 500 and IndyCar Rookie of the Year awards.

Brendon Hartley, along with Buemi and Nakajima, finished runners-up both at Le Mans and in the WEC. Matt Campbell and Jaxon Evans combined with Christian Ried to finish third in the WEC's GTE Am standings and tenth overall in GTE. James Allen finished third in LMP2 at Le Mans.

Lawson and Evans were on double duty; Lawson really should have won the DTM title this year but finished runner-up following a controversial final round, while Evans finished runner-up in Porsche Supercup.

Molly Taylor leads the new Extreme E championship with one round remaining, while Caitlin Wood scored a top five finish at Spa in the W Series.

I'm sure I've missed some drivers in categories I don't follow, but our part of the world has certainly been well represented this year!

Formula One / F2 2021
July 18, 2021, 02:22:52 PM
With Guanyu Zhou having some bad luck this weekend at Silverstone, Oscar Piastri has taken the series lead, helped by taking the bonus points for pole and the fastest lap in each Sprint. Starting from the front of the grid for the feature race this evening!

Fantastic job in his rookie season.

Formula One / 2022 car official release

The official release of the 2022 F1 car took place overnight:
https://www.speedcafe.com/2021/07/16/gallery-formula-1-showcases-2022-design/?image=0

To me it looks huge in the shot with the drivers. I think one thing F1 needs is smaller, lighter cars.

To get the ball rolling...

Great rebound for the Ford teams this weekend with three teams and drivers taking a win...yet SVG still scores the most points for the event! Though it took bad luck for Waters in Race 10 and Anton in Race 11 for that to happen.

Great to see Heimgartner finally get that first win, absolutely smashed the field on Saturday.
