Progress in Abu Dhabi F1 Circuit Redevelopment

Construction work currently underway at the Yas Marina circuit ahead of this year's Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is progressing well.

The Yas Marina venue is undergoing changes at both the northern and southern ends of the circuit.

Most notable of these are the changes to the North Hairpin, the corner which feeds onto the long back straight, and the South Marina segment.

The latter is arguably the most dramatic change, with a sequence of 90-degree corners set to be replaced with a banked left-hand sweeper.

"We are really delighted and excited to see the upgrades progressing through the stages," said Ali Al Beshir, circuit operations director.

"The team are working exceptionally hard, and we already have the demolition of the asphalt completed, along with the removal of lights and barriers from the key sections.

"With the support of our key partners and stakeholders we continue to progress well and are very much looking forward to the return of motorsport after the summer and, of course, the last race of the season, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix."

Yas Marina first hosted Formula 1 in 2009, and is arguably best remembered as the scene of the 2010 championship showdown between Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton.

Changes for the circuit were first mooted in June before being confirmed shortly after this year's grand prix was launched.

Organisers believe the changes will open alternate racing lines and therefore encourage on-track action.

"The management team at Yas Marina Circuit and ADMM (Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management) have really taken on board feedback from the fans and drivers," said Mark Hughes, managing director of Mrk1 Consultants, who is overseeing the changes.

"The project is a huge undertaking, nobody should underestimate the effort that goes into this.

"They're doing it for the benefits of the fans both in the grandstand and watching on TV by creating faster wheel-to-wheel racing and more opportunities to overtake for more thrilling races. It's massively exciting."

This year's event, confirmed last week as the season finale by Formula 1 amid rumours it could swap places with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, will be held on December 10-12.

F1 Sprint
A fast and furious single stint race

Saturday afternoon brings the first F1 Sprint – a 100km dash, which based on the length of the Silverstone track will be 17 laps and it'll last around 25-30 minutes.

It is hoped cars will run at maximum speed for the full distance, without having to conserve their tyres. That might mean the compound of choice varies from circuit to circuit.

The tyre model used by F1's data team suggests that all the tyres will have the same level of performance when they are around 15 laps old. After that, the quickest tyre becomes the hard, followed by the medium.

The softs will struggle after that point, with their performance dropping off quickly.

Will teams choose to run the soft tyre, that will be quicker but might need a little bit of tyre management to stretch it to the flag or go for the harder rubber and maximum attack for the duration? It's all part of the intrigue.

The winner will get three points. Second and third will get two and one point respectively, with the classification defining the grid – and the pole position winner – for Sunday's Grand Prix.

It's a lot to take in. But F1 TV Pro subscribers will be able to benefit from a raft of features to help them keep up with the action, including onboards from all 20 drivers featuring their uncensored team radio, as well as the Pit Lane Channel, providing fans with expert commentary, along with on-screen data and in-depth analysis.

Sue and I were lucky enough to be at Mid-Ohio this afternoon watching the Honda Indy 200 on our Nation's Birthday.  An absolutely one-sided affair in which J-New and Team Penske dominated on a beautiful day weather-wise.

The place was packed.  America has essentially lifted their COVID restrictions coast to coast this week.  And trust me, EVERYONE has come out of their cocoons.  Our campground here is packed as I sit on the porch of our cabin.  Mid-Ohio was packed.  Limaland Motorsports Park dirt speedway Friday night was packed.  We'll see where this all goes coming down the stretch, but right now the American alphabet is down to only 25 letters and the "D" is being passed over.

We may not be perfect, and who is, but we're still standing here after 245 years.  Happy Birthday, America, as the Red, White, and Blue Stars and Bars flags are on every camper in the place this weekend.

Guys, just a quick note with respect to Race 1.  The stewards have levied a points penalty against the 8 car/team post race.  The V8CFL will recognize this penalty.  The 8 car will subsequently receive zero points for Race 1.  Me, I have the 8 Car in my camp so this one really cuts deep for me.

I will tally up tomorrow morn after watching Races 2 and 3.

37 years ago today, May 25, 1984, I got out of the United States Navy after serving my country for six years.  I can still remember that day walking down the gangplank of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in Alameda, CA for the last time with my good friend Mitch Gunderson carrying my seabag.  That was a tradition back then - help an old friend off.  One of the greatest days of my life.  I am a patriot, through and through, but military management and myself did not really see eye-to-eye near the end of my run.  I fly the Stars & Bars flag every holiday still.  Memorial Day is next Monday, wherein we honor our fallen.
